Sustainability & Conservation
Sustainable Living and conservation are two topics that must be at the forefront of any travel company. We personally feel at Costa Rican Resource that until these topics are matters that are not talked about but are simply a matter of life, then we are fighting to survive. If you look at conservation we often enjoy telling the students that Costa Rica has almost 30% of its land protected and it is a country that has been a pioneer in protecting it's natural resources. What you should ask yourself is what are we protecting the 30% of the land from. The answer is "humans". This is an issue that needs to be addressed. Conservation is always talked about inside the parks and reserves but true conservation needs to be addressed outside of these parks. It needs to be looked at in the everyday decisions of large businesses and individuals.
Here at Costa Rican Resource we feel it is a very special time to be in the industry of sustainability and conservation because it is a critical moment to act on these issues and not just preach about them. Our lessons on conservation and sustainability come first hand with how we operate our business. When a student group visits Costa Rica we want them to not only learn about these topics but see first hand how we live our lives and how easy it can be.
There are many parts of a student trip to Costa Rica. We include the areas of ecoliteracy, biomimicry, and the history of conservation in Costa Rica. We give the students examples of where we need to be going as a planet and why. Our ultimate goal should be to live in a world that does not have to designate protected areas and not have to preach about how to live sustainably. These should be ideals that simply come natural.
We also are firm believers at Costa Rican Resource that green technology should be at the forefront of our fight for a sustainable future and for preserving our environment. At the rate our population is growing, green-technology is the only answer. Ever since we started pumping out fossil fuels we have been able to tap into millions of years' old energy, which produced more food, which ultimately produced more people, and more of a demand for more energy. It has to be understood that fossil fuels will run out but we just might destroy the atmosphere first. Our planet alone can not support our population today. This is why through the work of the biomimicry we are hopeful for a future planet that is much more sustainable and more conserved than what it is today. It is an amazing time in history and what we teach our youth now will have an affect on the not so distant future.
Education is what we need in order to understand global warming. It is only ignorance of the facts on the subject that has kept people from reacting responsibly. We at Costa Rican Resource feel that the majority of people are not educated enough, at least that is what we like to think, about global warming. Our goal is to teach students on our trips about global warmings past, present, and future. We want to explain and show firsthand the affects of global warming. We want to teach what the tropical belt of this globe does to the fight against global warming. We do many hands-on activities during and demonstrating the carbon cycle of the Earth and comparing different amounts of carbon emissions between the US and Costa Rica.
Here at Costa Rican Resource we are affiliated with the 350 Movement which is a movement dedicated to teaching people about just how real global warming is. The 350 stands for the amount of carbon dioxide that is in our atmosphere. The number 350 was coined by Bill McKibben who wrote one of the first books on global warming in 1989 called "The End of Nature". He took the number 350 from the lead scientist of NASA, James Hansen, who before having grandkids was just the smartest scientist on the planet. Today he is one of the most active voices in the fight against global warming as he wants to leave a planet for his grandkids that they can enjoy. James Hansen says our planet Earth should be at 350 parts per million to be a comfortable living environment for humans. Today it turns out we are at 390 and if we go on with business as usual, there will be devastating consequences.
This is not something everyone wants to hear, but it is a chance to be part of a generation that acted in response to what we knew. It is a time of great change all over the planet as we see incredible weather patterns all over setting record numbers. It is easy to put it all together and say something is different. We at Costa Rican Resource hope that we can make a difference in helping support the number 350 and do our part to continue to fight global warming.
